It’s Time for Recess

Let’s face the fact that many people don’t like to exercise. According to a report of the 2023 fitness trends, “only one in five US adults exercise every day.” Are you the one out of five? If so, get up and get moving. I exercise five to six days weekly, but I don’t call it exercise. Instead, I call it recess. Do you remember going to school, working hard, and then getting that break for morning and afternoon recess? We looked forward to recess because we could be free to do whatever we loved to do (or what the teachers allowed us to do). When I attempted to get back into the habit of body movement, I had to think of creative ways to get my heart rate up for a minimum of 20 minutes. The first thing I did was to stop calling it exercise. The second thing I did was list activities I enjoyed when I was younger, such as twirling the baton, jumping rope, and hula-hooping. The third thing I did was purchase a baton, a jump rope, and a hula-hoop. Initially, I felt silly walking down the street twirling a baton as if I were in a marching band. Once, while twirling across the school’s parking lot, someone asked me if I was looking for the band room. After that, I started twirling in my backyard. My point is to get your body moving by doing things that spark good memories. Do those things you once enjoyed during your younger years. It does not make a difference that you are slower or stiffer. What does matter is that you are having fun doing activities that will help you build endurance for more strenuous activities as you become physically fit over time.
