First Annual Paws to the Pedal Bike Race

The first ever Paws to the Pedal Bike Ride was a great success. Paws to the Pedal was introduced on Saturday, June 26th, 2021 here in Olney, as a way to raise money for the youth programs at The Refuge. Overall, there were 68 cyclists registered for the event, who came from all over Texas. The event included a 6 mile family friendly route, a 27 mile route, and a 44 mile route. The bike ride was organized by The Refuge, but would not have been possible without support from the community. Sponsors for the Paws to the Pedal Bike Ride include: Cub Nutrition, First State Bank, Hometown Coffee & Tea, Hope Fellowship, House of Mercy Enterprises, Olney InterBank, and Tower Extrusions. Special thanks to: Christian Motorcycle Association, City of Olney Public Works, Olney EMS, Olney Police Department, Olney Fire Department, TXDOT, and Young County Sheriff ’s Office. And thank you to all the volunteers. The money raised from the event totaled $1,116.35, which will go to The Refuge youth programs.

The greatest touchdown of all time

The greatest touchdown of all time

Our team scored big more than 2000 years ago. Jesus made the greatest touchdown of all time, causing us to win the game. But the other team began cheering when he was beaten down. Although the touchdown was for both teams, his opponent cheered the loudest as his followers looked on, denying that they knew him. What a touchdown! Surrounded by the defense, yet he held on to the ball of our sins, striving toward the finish line. He touched down on his knees in the garden of Gethsemane, praying, “Father, if it is your will, take away this cup from me.”

A message from Deidre Choat-Brown Olney Chamber of Commerce

This is the first big event I have had the pleasure of organizing since starting my job as director of the Chamber of Commerce in January of this year. At times, there were definitely fears of some little detail being forgotten, or not advertising the event enough. I had great help getting the word out between advertising in the Olney Enterprise Newspaper, Dan Branum speaking on Graham’s radio station 100.5FM, and our very own Mayor Rue Rogers and First Baptist Church pastor Chad Edgington speaking on the event at KFDX Newschannel 3 the morning of July 1st. I also had posters made with the awesome logo and a photo of our headlining performer, Jon Hope. All of these methods of advertising the event resulted in over 1,000 people in attendance, food trucks selling out, and an overall successful event!
