L.F. (and M.D.) and Pauline Gragg built the house in 1930. Hamilton Hospital records show that Dr. Gragg worked from 1911-1947 and received his medical training from the medical college in Ft. Worth, just like Dr. G.B. Hamilton. Dr Gragg was born in 1883 and died in 1947. The Graggs had two sons, Kibbie and W.A. (Mutt) Gragg, who grew up to run the doctor’s ranching interests in Young, Jack, and Palo Pinto Counties. Dr. Gragg officed in the very South end of the Palace Drug Store after 1935 in the building that had housed City National Bank. Palace was owned by Elby Wilborn and his wife Doris and aided by their son, Barney, especially in running the soda fountain.

Today I read that people are turning to familiar books, movies, television shows, and music during the pandemic. When questioned as to why she has turned, once again, to a book series that she read many times in childhood, one respondent explained that she is drawn to the books because, unlike this season of coronavirus, she knows exactly how the story will end. Maybe this is why we are attracted to old television shows that made us laugh or cry in our younger years, and the music that soothed us as twenty-somethings when we faced an unknown world. These things are predictable. They seem simple. They comfort us in their familiarity.

As the COVID-19 pandemic has continued, I have noticed that each person is handling it differently. Some people and families are deciding to stay inside and quarantine throughout this time, not leaving the house at all other than for essentials needs. Others are choosing to let this not completely control their lives, deciding to take road trips to the mountains, a walk at the park, amongst other things. It is always fascinating to see from afar how people handle certain events differently but through all of it, I believe the most important thing is to respect one another and respect our decision-making.
