County Clerk Kay Hardin announces retirement

County Clerk Kay Hardin abruptly announced her retirement at the Jan. 9 Commissioners Court meeting, just eight days after she was sworn in for a third term in office. Mrs. Hardin did not provide any details about her decision when she broke the news to the commissioners during the public comment period at the start of the meeting. She has served Young County since Jan. 1, 2015. State law allows the Commissioners Court to appoint a temporary County Clerk to fill the position until a special election can be held, County Judge Win Graham said. The special election most likely will be held during the November 2024 general election, although the commissioners planned to discuss their options in a special meeting, he said.

City Council awards airport infield contract

The Olney City Council awarded a four-year contract for maintaining the municipal airport infield to Jordan Haralson, provided he presented the council with a valid certificate of general liability insurance Mr. Haralson and Herb Bernhardt had each submitted bids to keep the 111-acre infield mowed and free of mesquite saplings. The Council was seeking a fouryear maintenance contract, which Mr. Haralson submitted Mr. Bernhardt submitted a one-year contract, City Administrator Arpegea Pagsuberon told the Council. Mr. Haralson proposed paying the City $500 in the second year of the contract, $800 in the third year, and $1,000 in the fourth year to allow him to grow hay on the land, she said. The Council expressed concern that whoever got the maintenance contract should carry a general liability insurance policy to cover any fire or damage to Air Tractor and privately owned planes at the airport.

City sets May 6 election, hears departmental reports

The Olney City Council authorized City Secretary Tammy Hourigan to enter into a contract with the Young County elections administrator to conduct municipal general elections on May 6. Councilmembers Chuck Stennett, Harrison Wellman and Brad Simmons will be on the ballot. The election will not be held if there are no challengers, Mayor Pro Tem Tom Parker said.
