The Chitwood-Perez House

In the 1920s, J.F. Smirl got possession of Lot 2, Block 42 of the Stovall Subdivision of the Dieter Farm and sold it to W.D. Chitwood (1875- 1945) in 1928, and that is the year the assumption is that is when the house was built. In 1936, Chitwood gave a lien on the house to C.D. Shamberger Lumber Company, and his wife Carrie (Carter) (1877-1942) did not sign the note since Chitwood had not designated it as a homestead.

“The Dress” # 2 in the series “Young Teachers of the Past”

I looked at the dress as it was displayed on a mannequin at the Olney Heritage Museum. I was fascinated with the style and beauty of the dress from the 1930s era, and the history connected to it. It was owned by Willie Ida Leberman Wainwright, mother of Carla Wainwright Perry.

In 1924, W.J. Logan sold the lot to M.D. Council, an early day lawyer here in Olney. In 1928, Council and his wife Ophia sold the lot to George (1877-1962) and Rosie Belle (Upton) (1885- 1967) Scott.
