Council updated on pool, housing projects

Olney Mayor Rue Rogers updated the City Council on the progress of homes planned by Crombie Properties of Olney and the Groves brothers of Possum Kingdon, and the municipal swimming pool. Lance and Corey Groves are building a three-bedroom, two-bath home on Oak Street and Avenue E as part of their “Rural Route Revival” streaming series set to debut early next year. The documentary-style series about renewing rural towns in Texas will feature Olney in its first installment. Mayor Rogers said the weather had impeded progress on the project.

At its most recent term, the Young County Grand Jury indicted seven people from Olney or involved in alleged crimes perpetrated in the City of Olney, county records show. The Grand Jury of the 90th District Judicial Court considered the alleged crimes during its January-May term. The slew of indictments capped more than a year of investigations by the Olney Police Department. Police Chief Dan Birbeck said recently that the volume of cases that he and his officers are handling these days has slowed, possibly due to enforcement efforts that saw the department handling nearly 1,000 cases last year.

The folks at the Olney Senior Cub Center gave a shout-out to Olney Police Chief Dan Birbeck, who stepped in for vacationing volunteers to make deliveries for the Meals on Wheels program last week. “Every summer, one of our volunteer teams goes on vacation and I reach out to the community to see who can deliver meals on wheels,” Angela Lockard, Cub Center executive director, said. “I reached out to Dan and expected him to cover a couple of days. He took all five days. We were just thrilled with that and very thankful.” The route has 33 deliveries and takes about an hour, she said. If you’re interested in delivering meals or pinch-hitting for regular drivers, call the Senior Cub Center at 940-564-2782.
