Two Students Advance to State Solo/Ensemble Contest

Olney High School rising senior Adelade Edgington and I participated in the University Interscholastic League’s State Solo/Ensemble Contest on May 29 in Pflugerville, Texas. Adelade, who performed a vocal solo, ranked 2 on a scale of 5. I was invited to take the competitive Music Theory test, will receive my results later this month. Adelade advanced to the state competition in February, after she received a 1 out of 5 score at the region level. Meanwhile, I was invited by OISD Band Directors Rodney and Marilyn Bennett to attend the UIL competition, and take the Music Theory Test at the state level. The one-hour test consisted of 30 written questions and 30 auditory questions, in which students listened to a piece of music and identify notes and rhythms. I was so excited to be invited to the State Competition this year! In previous years, Adelade and I had both made it, but because of COVID-19, we were unable to attend. Therefore, we were ecstatic when we were told that we finally had the chance to go. Adelade and I were also able to explore Austin and Round Rock during our trip. We visited the Round Rock Premium Outlet Mall, as well as eating at Salt Grass barbecue restaurant and watching a movie. We could have never done this without the Bennetts. I thank them for letting us participate in such a competition and I’m so excited to try and go next year!
