On the morning of September 11, 2001, the world changed forever. Four hijacked planes, two striking New York’s Twin Towers, one crashing into the Pentagon, and another forced down in Pennsylvania, took nearly 3,000 lives and left a mark on every American who lived through it.
I’m a Texas American. I speak English like I was taught and have a Texas “twang.” I know this because in one of my past jobs, I answered the phone and determined who the caller was and if they needed to be transferred, or if I just needed to take a message with a number.
For a man who never darkened the doors of a church building, I have never met anyone more biblically moral. Certainly, no theologian and often frustrated by the men of organized religion, he retreated from the business dealings and social dwellings of commingling among them. There is irony in his story. Bitterness at the church, perhaps, but God-honoring in the way he lived. High strung, yet easy going. Eccentric, yet well respected. Long suffering, yet charitable… in private. I learned much from him, but he always told me, “If you are able, give what you have if they need it, but do it quietly.”
A group of 13 members from the United Methodist Church of Olney recently returned from a groundbreaking mission trip to Baldwin, Louisiana, where they assembled hygiene kits for disaster survivors—proving that even a weekend can make a lasting impact.
