School board considers sex education program

The Olney Independent School District board approved a plan to offer a health and sexuality course to sixth through eighth graders, possibly starting as soon as next school year. The LifeGuard Character and Sexuality Education course was reviewed by the School Health Advisory Council, a group of local parents and educators, and will put OISD back in compliance with Texas Education Agency requirements, OISD Superintendent Dr. Greg Roach said. “It’s needed,” Dr. Roach said. “The kids are getting exposed to [sexual content] and it rewires their brains and we want to make sure it’s age appropriate.”

Young County Commissioners voted to grant a one-year extension to the planned hydrogen production facility that will pay taxes to the Olney Hamilton Hospital and Newcastle Independent School District, due to what the company described as labor and equipment shortages.

The pews at Olney’s churches filled up with friends and families reuniting for Easter Sunday celebrations. St. Luke Lutheran Church held its annual Sonrise service in the field beside the church followed by a pancake breakfast. Congregants came together to watch the sunrise huddled in blankets and sipping warm drinks as Pastor Sean Reeves preached the good news about the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
