Olney Hosts American Legion District Meeting

For the first time in recent memory, the American Legion District 13 Spring Convention came to Olney, drawing members from across the region for a day of business, fellowship and community support under District Commander Chris Garcia.

Mr. Garcia said the event marked a milestone for the district. “It’s the first time to my knowledge,” he said. “It may not be the last time either.”

Hosted by American Legion Post 414, the convention blended routine business with a strong emphasis on outreach and rebuilding participation. Speakers highlighted ongoing efforts to support veterans at the Bonham VA facility through monthly donations, as well as the revival of the district’s Christmas store program, which allows veterans to shop for and send gifts to their families.

Membership growth also emerged as a priority, with leaders urging posts to strengthen auxiliary and Sons of the American Legion programs to expand their base of active volunteers. Mr. Garcia noted that posts with strong support groups consistently accomplish more in their communities.

T he group also heard from Brian LaLonde who described his ongoing work with Catholic Charities and the Bonham VA facility. Mr. LaLonde coordinates regular donation efforts across District 13, collecting items from local posts and ensuring they are delivered directly to veterans in care.

He described the program as both logistical and personal, requiring coordination with volunteers willing to transport goods, as well as communication with staff at the facility to identify specific needs. That work, he said, has grown steadily, with consistent monthly trips and increasing participation from posts throughout the district.

Mr. LaLonde also shared how those efforts extend beyond general donations. In one case, he helped assist a veteran from Olney, working through Catholic Charities and district contacts to make sure the individual received housing and job support and resources during a difficult time. The district recently received a formal thankyou letter recognizing those contributions, noting both the volume of donations and the difference they make for residents at the Bonham facility. Mr. LaLonde said the goal is to keep that pipeline steady.

“It only works if we keep showing up,” he said.

Mr. Garcia credited the success of the convention to the host post and local businesses that stepped in to help.

“The District 13, 2026 Spring Convention was a great success,” he said. “We had a fantastic turnout and everyone had a great time.”

He singled out Hudson’s on Main for providing meals, Cub Nutrition for offering discounted drinks, and Phil Jeske for event space, along with donors including 3T Meats, Archer & Gunn Mercantile, Vortex Optics and Emberly Nurre.

“Everyone was so happy with how it turned out,” Mr. Garcia said. “And we’re thankful to everyone who made the trip to Olney.”
