Varsity Girls Volleyball gets off to an even start

The Lady Cubs Varsity Volleyball team had an eventful start to the season, winning one and losing one in non-district games.

On Sept. 4, they played at Perrin- Whitt and lost in four sets. Perrin won the first two sets, 25-15 and 25-23. Olney came back in the third 25-17, but lost the fourth set 25-16.

On Sept. 9, the Lady Cubs won at home against Bryson in three sets. Olney won all three sets, 25-19, 25-17, and 25-10.

Freshman Braelyn Casteel said the team will soon start district and still has some things to work on.

“We start district Sept. 23 against Windthorst,” Casteel said, adding they need to work on “probably passing, especially passing and blocking.”

Senior Jalyee Bowers said, “I would say the team’s biggest weakness is not being able to serve consistently. However, our biggest strength is being able to persevere through the hard times and push ourselves.”

Bowers and some others agreed that Windthorst is their biggest competitor, considering they’re defending state champs.

“But I think we can compete very closely with the other schools, Archer, Quanah, Petrolia, and Seymour,” Bowers said. “We have goals to get a gold ball this year.”

Bowers added what motivated her during games.

“My family cheering me on in the stands motivates me. Also, seeing the team’s reaction when something good happens is very motivating during the games. The rest of the team really feeds off of everybody else’s motivation,” Bowers said.
