PROFILE: New Head Coach

As of last month, Jason Powers has been named as the new head football coach for the Olney Cubs. A head football coach coordinates all the practices and drills, and ensures that players understand what they need to do. The head football coach even oversees all the assistant coaches. Despite Coach Powers’s love for Olney, he did not always live here.

“Three years ago we came to Olney. I came from Amarillo where I coached for 13 years at my former High School (Tascosa),” says Coach Powers. “I have wanted to be a Head Football Coach since I played the last football game of my senior year. The coaches I had in high school were very instrumental in developing me as a young man and I want to be able to have the same impact on kids.”

As he states, Coach Powers has always wanted to be a head football coach and now he is living up to that dream right here in Olney. However, before he ever became head football coach, he was the defensive coordinator for the Olney Cubs.

“The last three years I was given the opportunity to be the Defensive Coordinator for the Olney Cubs,” says Coach Powers. “During that time I was able to work under Coach Guy and learn. I have been very blessed to work under two great head football coaches and I plan to take pieces from each of them as I move forward into the next chapter of my career.”

For Coach Powers, this opportunity isn’t just for him. It’s also so he can better help lead the kids to a good direction in their lives and give them a successful future.

“For the past three years we have set the foundation for this next generation of Olney Cubs,” says Coach Powers. “Being able to be a part of that was very special to me and being given the opportunity to continue to lead these young men into the future is a great opportunity. I want to thank the School Board, Dr. Roach, Gunter Rodriguez, and the rest of the community for giving me this opportunity to become the next Head Football Coach in Olney.”
