Olney FFA attends Greenhand Camp

On Sept. 25, first year agricultural students went to the Future Farmers of America Greenhand camp in Abilene at the West Texas Fair Grounds to learn the basics of FFA and other skills. Attendees included Jonathan Anderson, Jackson Jones, Jacob Murgia, Jackson Spurlock-Fenner, Leah Galindo, and Will Caffey “Greenhand camp is put on by our area FFA officers and our state FFA officers,” Haylee Haralson, local FFA Sponsor said. “The students learned leadership skills, things about the FFA such as expectations, FFA official dress, competitions they can be in, and the benefits of joining. They also learned life skills such as the importance of thinking about what you post on social media and how to interact well with others.”

To better help understand the skills being taught, the officers made games to play with the students.

“One activity that comes to mind is they (the students) had to balance some heavy blocks on a circular board and they slowly added additional weight,” Haralson said. “The point of this was to show that it can be hard to balance all things and sometimes you may have to pick and choose things that are most beneficial to you and what you want to be someday. Also getting people to help you can also help you balance it all.”

After the event Spurlock- Fenner stated that he thoroughly believes he will join FFA and that he wants to pursue a career of teaching FFA.

“I learned what FFA was all about, which is an impressive organization that allows students to learn how agriculture works and functions.” Spurlock-Fenner said.
