Olney Cubs Battle the Seymour Panthers in the District Game, Oct. 16

On Oct. 15, the Olney Cubs hosted the Seymour Panthers for the Cubs’ 2nd District game. These teams have had a competitive rivalry dating back decades.

The Cubs fell to the Panthers 28-40. Things could have been different if not for 5 or 6 critical mistakes made by the Cubs.

First-quarter highlights include a 20-yard touchdown pass by Seymour with a successful 2-point conversion. The Cubs’ offense fired back with an 18-yard touchdown run by #21 Cole Turner, with a successful 2-point conversion by #9 Camron McComack.

After ending the first quarter, the Panthers ran back kickoff return and a successful point, Olney-8 Seymour-15.#12 Jonathan Melchor had a 7-yard touchdown run to open the second quarter with a Cub failed 2-point conversion. Then, the Panthers air game began to find success with a 20-yard and a 37-yard touchdown pass. Both Touchdowns had failed 2-point conversions thanks to the Cubs’ strong defense. #5 Gatlin Guy ran one in after the Cubs pushed the Panthers all the way to the 1-yard line. A successful 2-point conversion was made possible by #5 Guy’s pass to #9 Camron McComack, ending the first half gameplay Cubs-22 Panthers-27.

A fumble after during the Cubs return set the Panthers up for a 10-yard touchdown and a successful point after. #10 Cyler Sosa scored 6 with a 10-yard run, and Cubs failed on a 2-point conversion. The Panthers scored 6 with a failed 2-point conversion to end third-quarter play. During the fourth quarter, both teams’ defense kept the offense from scoring to end Cubs-28 Panthers-40.

Offensive highlights from the game include #5 Gatlin Guy rushing for 198 yards, #12 Jonathan Melchor rushed for 75 yards, #21 Cole Turner rushed for 70 yards, with the three players each scoring a touchdown, #10 Cyler Sosa scored the remaining touchdown and #9 Camron McComack had 19 yards receiving. Defensive highlights include the following players, having three tackles each: #10 Cyler Sosa, #9 Camron McComack, #8 Tavon Scrogum, #4 Axel Flores. # 67 Noah Enriquez had two tackles and five assists, # 68 Luis Castillo had two tackles and three assists, #55 Jordan Jacoba had one tackle and four assists, #50 Donny Welsh One tackle and two and #67 Luis Marquez had one tackle and three assists. As you can see by the numbers, the Cubs’ defense is playing as a cohesive unit, with great speed getting to the ball as a unit.
