Olney Chamber Golf Tournament

The Olney Chamber of Commerce awarded the top prize at its annual Golf Tournament to a couples team, Steve and Darla Fikes, paired with Rick and Jill Davis. Steve Fikes has been a longtime Chamber supporter through the Farmer’s Bureau Insurance Agency of Graham.

The four-person scramble yielded a $300 first prize. The winning team shot a combined score of 56 strokes on the 18-hole challenge to best 11 other teams, Chamber Executive Director Deidre Brown says.

The second and third place teams were challenged to a scorecard playoff since they had both tied for second. Olney Recreation Association President Landon Rowe was teamed up with Chad Dodson, Mike McElroy and Susan McElroy. Rowe’s team’s efforts on hole 6 resulted in their winning the second place prize. Rowe immediately re-invested his $200 prize in raffle tickets to win the Chamber raffle item of the day, a TurtleBox Bluetooth Speaker. “I was heavily invested in it,” Rowe said.

“I gave back in that way – I gave them tickets.” Melvin Greenhaw and his team claimed the third-place pot of $100. Melvin is

Participants also had the chance to win Titleist golf balls and a hat from the Olney Recreation Association pro shop. The Chamber had “closest to the pin” and “longest drive” contests, which awarded the winner $25 each. Winners were – Longest Drive (Women’s) – Kammie Fore, and Longest Drive (Men’s) – Jackie Cooper. The closest to the Pin winner was Michael Jackson. Edwanna Fikes won the golf balls and Darla Fikes won the ORA cap. This year, a dice game was introduced at holes 4 and 13, in which players could

This year, a dice game was introduced at holes 4 and 13, in which players could either pay $5 to roll the dice to determine their score or pay $20 for a hole-in-one.

“Every team ended up paying $20 for the hole-in-one,” said Brown. Sylvia’s provided breakfast taquitos before the 9 a.m. tee-off, and El Chamuco brought in a lunch consisting of street tacos, chips and salsa.

The title sponsor of this tournament was Cemco.

The Chamber netted $515 from the tournament to support its yearly activities, including networking nights, quarterly lunches, and the Olney in America July Fourth festival that also takes place at the Olney Country Club, Brown said.

The golf tournament is a win-win for the Olney Country Club as well, Rowe said.“We just pretty much appreciate the Chamber for participating out at the course. The funding they provide to the course from the tournament is what goes toward having Olney in America at the Club.”
