“Although it was super scary, all the girls were super nice and supportive,” Englishbee said. “Overall, it was a great experience and I had lots of fun.”
For many athletes, competing at state was one of the biggest moments of the season. Casteel said the experience was both exciting and motivating.
“Going to state in powerlifting was such a wonderful experience,” Casteel said. “Knowing that everyone there has had to work so incredibly hard to get there is truly motivating.”
The boys’ team also had a strong season, with lifters like Esquivel and Dom Collins standing out. According to Coach Casey Keeter, Esquivel exceeded his goal by 100 pounds, while Collins placed third at regionals during his first year in powerlifting.
“State was fun,” Johnson said. “We ate a lot, I made some new friends, but it was a bit overwhelming with all the people.”
Several athletes also showed major improvements over the season. Keeter said Esquivel improved the most in equipped lifting with a 270 pound increase, while Collins improved the most in unequipped with an 80 pound gain.
Overall, the season gave athletes the chance to grow, compete, and represent Olney with pride. With strong performances at state, Olney powerlifting finished the year on a high note.
