OHS Band Competes at UIL

Members of the Olney High School Band performed at the UIL Region 7 Concert and Sightreading Evaluation on Wednesday, March 27. The event was hosted by Legacy High School in Wichita Falls.

Concert selections for the first portion of the evaluation was a march entitled “Circus Days” by Karl King, arranged by Loras Schissel, ”Ye Banks and Braes O’ Bonnie Doon” by Percy Aldridge Grainger, and “Along the River’s Shore” by James Swearingen. Dr. Rodney D. Bennett, Director of Bands for OISD, served as conductor of the group.

Ratings for the concert portion were 1, 2, 2 which is an excellent rating.

Judges included Ms. Nicole Baxter, Director of Bands and Fine Arts Director of Lubbock Cooper High School, Mr. Eric Rath, Director of Bands at Canyon High School, and Mr. Robbie Edwards (retired) of Fort Worth.

Ratings for the concert program were 1, 2, 2, which is termed an “excellent” rating.

OHS Band members also participated in the sight reading portion of the evaluation. Music was given to them, instructions were given by Dr. Bennett, and students performed the work for judges.

Mr. Jim Alexander (retired) of Alvarado, Mr. Joe Walker, Director of Bands for Godley ISD, and Mr. Doug Fulwood, Director of Fine Arts for Royce City served as adjudicators. Mrs. Sheryl Kingcade (retired) from Iowa Park served as the compliance officer.

Ratings for the sight reading performance were straight ones.

Band students earned a plaque for their sight reading scores.

Mrs. Marilyn Bennett, Associate Director of Bands, accompanied the OHS Band. Others attending the event were Dr. Greg Roach, Mrs. Nancy Roach, Mr. Drew Roberts, Mr. Homer Molina, Mr. Eric Cuba, Mrs. Kayla Glover, and OAP non-band students.
