Maddie Barrington holds third in golf

Olney High School Senior Mattie Barrington placed third at the University Interscholastic League (UIL) Class 2A State Golf Tournament at Roy Kizer Golf course in Austin. Barrington’s final score was 153 that tied her Kenley Nixon from Martin’s Mill. In place of a playoff, Barrington and Nixon shared the bronze medal that accompanied the third-place position. Mia Nixon from Martin’s Mill earned the first-place position with a total score of 142 and Katelin Berry from Stratford earned second place with an overall score of 147. Barrington told Jonathan Hull with Times Record News her success is attributed to her playing on the Roy Kizer Golf course in previous years. “I was able to understand the course more after being here all those years before. I was able to place balls where I wanted them. I take it shot by shot. If you hit a bad first shot, it’s OK, just move on to the next one,” she said to TRN.

Barrington graduated from Olney High School in May. A few of her achievements in golf include: Placing second as a team in district and third place on the Regionals team during her freshman year and placing first individual Regional and third Individual Regional, State Qualifier Sophomore year. Her plans consist of attending college and pursuing a career as a professional golfer.

Barrington is the daughter of Olney residents, Jeff and Terri Barrington. Barrington’s golf coach is Austin Phillips of Olney High School. Barrington expressed gratitude to her family, friends and coaches for their support.
