Lady Cubs stifle Munday with strong defense

MUNDAY — The Olney Lady Cubs knew they needed to win out to secure a playoff spot and began that journey with a 23-17 victory over the Munday Mogulettes Tuesday.

The Lady Cubs played a full-court press for most of regulation, holding Munday to just three first-half scores.

“This was a crucial win for us,” junior forward La’Anna Golden said. “We knew we had to attack from the beginning, get the lead and hold it throughout the whole game. We had to fight and they were gaining on us. We just had to finish the fight.”

Golden, who lead the Lady Cubs in scoring with 8 points, put Olney up early on a pair baskets, as well as scores by sophomore guard Jae Montgomery and senior forward Geri Heath. After leading 11-6 going into halftime, Munday rallied back to cut the lead six. That was as close as the Mogulettes would come to victory as Montgomery gave Olney a bit of distance after picking up a foul on a successful 3-pointer, then sinking the follow-up free throw for a 4-point play.

The Cubs hit the road again Friday to face arch rival Archer City. Tipoff for the junior varsity is 4 p.m. with the varsity soon to follow.
