Lady Cubs get mixed results
Recent games for the Olney Lady Cubs Varsity Volleyball team were mixed. They had a great win against Munday on Saturday, Aug. 31, and a close game that ended with a loss against Perrin- Whitt on Tuesday, Sept. 3.
The Lady Cubs won the Munday game in three sets, scoring 2624, 25-22, 26-24. They lost a well-matched game against Perrin-Whitt in five sets, losing the first, third, and last sets 2514, 25-23, and 15-6, but winning the second and fourth sets 25-23 and 2624. “Last week’s games were a great chance for us players to be able to keep pushing under pressure and to keep momentum going,” Morgan Simmons, junior, said. “We all learned valuable lessons that not only expanded our skills in volleyball, but also our mental strength.” The Lady Cubs have used those games to find what they need to change or improve for the future.
“I believe that our team can improve by getting ourselves out of a hole or a tough situation,” Simmons said. “Volleyball is very dependent on positive attitudes and energy, and it is important that we maintain them.” Despite some of the losses, the Lady Cubs have still started a successful season where they have learned a great deal. “A strength of the Lady Cubs is the unity within the team,” Simmons said. “This year I believe that we all work together fairly well and we enjoy each other’s company.” The Lady Cubs are only about halfway through the season, but they have still shared many memorable moments.
“I’m not sure I could pick out a singular favorite moment but I would say anytime we get a good dig, set, or hit we all get to be goofy and celebrate,” Natalie Rodriguez, senior, said. For the seniors, Rodriguez, Emily Marquez, Clara Neal, Krystal Hernandez, and Joselyn Marquez, it’s a bittersweet time, but they have big plans for the future of the season.
“My goal for the season, which is really my goal for the team, is to get at least two gold balls for us and to just make a lot of great memories in my last high school season,” Rodriguez said.
