Olney senior guard Kodie Scott sinks a shot against Newcastle.

Lady Cubs get first win against Chico, but fall to Anson

The Olney High School Lady Cubs became the first OHS team to earn a victory in head-to-head competition this year after besting Chico 37-27.

The Lady Cubs earned their first victory in a road game, which now has them sitting atop their conference with a 1-0 record.

“It was really important. We had to prove to ourselves that if we keep working and do what we’re coached to do, then good things will happen,” Olney coach James Toney said. “We have it in us to win and a lot of it is getting us to believe in ourselves. It showing in the win column is always a bonus.”

Despite briefly evening their record to 1-1, following a season-opening loss to 22nd-ranked Newcastle, the Lady Cubs fell short of earning a winning record after a 55-25 loss to Anson.

Toney believes his team competed well, but Anson ran away with the game in the second quarter. He added that, aside from the second quarter, his team did well despite missing star senior guard Kodie Scott, who was absent from the game due to a college visit with Navy Academy Track Team coaches.

“They busted their butts from buzzer to buzzer,” Toney said. “That score is not indicative of how we played. It’s indicative of about a minute and 20 seconds. They got some steals in layups in quick succession. Defensively, they were doing great ... Anson is a good team. They can shoot lights out. That is what we need to see — teams that apply pressure and not taking it off. Plus, not having Kodie and our full-team dynamic hurt a little but. She would have helped some.”
