Jalen Terry Makes Times Record News Player of the Week

Olney’s very own Jaylen Terry, No. 20 of the Olney Cubs boys’ varsity team, recently was recognized as the player of the week in the Times Record News Jan. 21. While earning his place on the player of the week list, he is the leading scorer of the season averaging 18.1 points per game.

The Olney Cubs basketball head coach, Carl Pennington said, “It’s wonderful for Jayden, I think it was a big boost for Jayden knowing the people in the community support him.” Pennington said it was a team effort that led to Jaylen’s ability to make those shots.

Pennington discussed the Cubs’ future. “The rest of the coaching staff has been working very hard to get the junior varsity ready for next year. All we ask is for them to get better after every game because we are losing eight seniors next year; during the offseason, they will need to get stronger and work harder to improve every day. As long as they do that, we will have a shot to be successful next year,” Pennington said.

Pennington believes Jaylen has contributed most to the team by having fun with the other guys and joking around with them. He said this helps boost team comradery and helps keep the team loose. “When Jaylen is playing [well], we are playing [well] because the other team focuses on Jaylen opening up other players to make big plays. When the team is clicking with Parker, Carter, Cesar and the rest of the team, we have a good shot to go deep into the playoffs,” Pennington said.

Last year the Cubs were 5-25. This year the Cubs have won 12 games and four district games. Pennington believes they have exceeded expectations and made a significant improvement compared to last year.
