Cubs win draws them closer to playoff birth

MUNDAY— The Olney Cubs improved to 5-3 in district play following Tuesday’s 29-21 victory over the Munday Moguls.

The Cubs’ held the Moguls to just 8 points in the first half, thanks to turnovers created by their full-court press that held the Moguls scoreless throughout most of the first quarter.

“We came out playing better defense,” said senior guard Carson Fite, who led the Cubs in scoring with 13 points. “We had a lot of enthusiasm, but we slacked off in the second half and that is what killed us.”

Fite capped off the first quarter by hitting the first of his four 3-pointers, the added another bucket before a 3-pointer by fellow senior guard Brent McCorkle pushed the Cubs’ lead to 12. The Cubs added Three more from the free-throw line to going into halftime with a 21-8 lead.

Although much of the second and third quarter scoring would come from beyond the arch, Fite said it was the strong play of the Cubs’ posts that gave him the confidence to attempt those shots.

“It gives us a ton of confidence,” Fite said. “When you shoot it, you know they are going to be down there. Even if you get a pass out there, you know you can chuck it down to them and they will do something productive with it.”

The Cubs hit the road again Friday to face arch rival Archer City. Tipoff for the junior varsity is 4 p.m. with the varsity soon to follow. The Cubs will host Seymour next Tuesday with the same tipoff time.
