Cubs Open Preseason with Trojan Scrimmage
The Olney Cubs travelled to Windthorst to open preseason football with a scrimmage against the Trojans. The Cubs look to have a smaller, faster team except for a few big linemen, which will play in favor of the Cubs’ new offensive scheme. That looks like a run-and-gun-style offense, compared to the Veer offense the Cubs have used over the last seven years.
The Veer was effective largely due to the big offensive linemen the Cubs had during that period. The Veer is an option- based running scheme that focused on chipping away at yardage 3 to 7 yards at a time on average, with bigger breakaway running plays every so often.
For years there have been grumblings from the stands of alumni and spectators wanting to see more passing. For any complaining about the mostly running offense, it was a successful program that took the Cub from a 12-year losing streak into a team going deep in the playoffs.
The Cubs will have the wealth of experience with new Head Coach Dustin Altmiller who says it will take time to build the new program up but he will strive to get better each day by at least one percent.
Coach Altmiller comes from Benbrook High School from an offensive coordinator position and one of the coaches who helped build the Benbrook football team from the ground up.
The Cubs looked good against the Windthorst Trojans once the Cubs worked out the nerves that usually come from the start of a season, and getting used to a new program.
Look for the Cubs to possibly make it to the first round of the playoffs and to really shine next season as the players get more comfortable with the new run-and-gun passing offense.
Good luck this seasons, Cubs!
