Cubs make quick work of Northside

OLNEY—  The Olney High School Cubs picked up their first Region II District II win after easily dispatching Northside 17-2.

The Cubs put up a respectable three runs in the first inning, but busted the game wide open with a 13-run second inning and added one more in the third to run-rule Northside.

While Monday’s game had plenty of highlights, one that may have lifted a few spirits was the inside-the-park home run by senior catcher Ceasar Flores, who would go on to lead the Cubs in RBIs with four on the day.

“I got too excited (at third),” Flores said. “I though ‘I’m going to get it for the first time. My goal was to keep running until I stopped.”

Flores’ home run was the first of his career. Junior Porter Elliot nearly eclipsed Flores’ RBI mark with three, followed by junior Dalton Trouille two RBIs.

“We had a good vibe going the whole game,” Flores said.  “We needed to focus lately and we focused very well today. Hopefully, this will turn us around.”

With the win, the Cubs improved to 1-2 in the district and 3-9 overall.

“We did a better job than what we have been,” Olney coach Kevin Bartley said. “We have a couple of young guys that need some discipline that are swinging at a couple of high pitches, but that comes with time and experience. This was good to see.”

The Cubs will face Seymour on the road Thursday, then host Quanah Monday.

First pitch for both games is set for 5 p.m.
