Cubs get wins in baseball tournament

Olney Cub baseball has had a very busy start to the season. Last week the Cubs played in the Brown County Invitational Tournament from Thursday, Feb. 22, through Saturday, Feb. 24.

During the tournament the Cubs played Eastland, Early, Winters, and Coleman. They lost 6-2 against Eastland and 11-1 against Early; however, the Cubs beat winters 9-5 and tied Coleman 4-4.

“They got better as the tournament went on,” Head Coach Braden Williams said. “They played their best game against Coleman.”

At the tournament, Jordan Jacoba went 3 for 6 at the plate with a double and 4 RBI’s. Brady Lisle went 2 for 7 at the plate and had 2 RBIs.

Cye Dixon pitched 5 innings, giving up 2 hits and 1 earned run. Jacoba pitched 4 innings, giving up 4 hits and 3 earned runs. Tucker Cortinez pitched 3.2 innings, giving up 3 hits and no earned runs.

As a first year coach at Olney, Williams said he is a bit nervous; however, he is very excited and ready for the season.

Williams also said that the team has a great possibility to make a deep playoff run this year.

The Cubs’ next games are in the Graham tournament Thursday, February 29 against Stephenville JV at 6 p.m. and Friday, March 1, against Brownwood JV at 12 p.m. and Iowa park at 2 p.m.

“It’s difficult when a new coach comes in and tries to implement how they want the things to be done, but everyone has done a tremendous job trying to absorb as much of the information as possible. I expect us to be really competitive in district and give ourselves a chance to reach the playoffs,” Williams said. “How we continue to practice will determine how far we can go in the playoffs. If we keep practicing how we have so far this year we could make a good run.”
