Cubs Fall to Loboes in District Game

The Olney Cubs Varsity football team traveled to Cisco on Oct. 7 to duke it out in district play. The Cubs continued a second week of missteps and penalties, and otherwise would have given the Loboes a bigger fight for the win. The Cubs fell to the Loboes 15-34.

First-quarter play was a defensive battle that kept the scoreboard quiet with no score by either team. Second quarter was when the trouble began for the Cubs. The defense battled hard but the Lobo offense pushed down the field amid many questionable calls throughout the evening. The Loboes ended the push by scoring 7. The Cubs offense pushed down the field, fighting back against Lobo defenders and refs and had to settle for a 17-yard field goal by Jacob Hernandez. The Cubs defense was caught off guard during the kick-off and the Loboes ran it back 85-yards for touchdown and good PAT.

In the third quarter, the Loboes made another breakaway run for 65-yards and good for 7 with the PAT. Cubs started making good progress, pressing the Loboes down the field and ending with a punchthrough from Cubs Quarterback Gatlin Guy and a failed 2-point conversion. That put the score at 9-21 in favor of the Loboes. The Loboes grinded back down the field, eating away at the clockm, and successfully punched through the Cubs defense for 6 and a good PAT, ending the third quarter at 9-28.

The fourth quarter was more of the same with both teams relying on their ground games. Both teams scored 6 with failed PATs, ending the game with the Cubs at 15 and the Loboes at 34.

The announcers and fans were scratching their heads at the one-sided calling by the refs, as the announcers called out many holding calls missed by the refs for the Loboes’ side of the ball, as well as a blatant personal foul call by the refs for the Loboes. All in all, the Cubs held up fairly well against Number 8-ranked Cisco. If not for the mistakes and penalties, this game could have easily gone in the Cubs’ favor. The Cubs offense had 354 total yards to the Loboes 388. The Cubs had four penalties and two turnovers. The turnovers unfortunately were at key field positioning that gave the Loboes close striking distance to the end zone. Come out and support the Cubs as they take on the Anson Tigers at Cub Stadium this Friday. Fight on Cubs!!!
