Cubs Dash HOCO Hopes Two Weeks in a Row

The Olney High School Cubs captured the top spot at the District opener last weekend with a 54-0 shutout against the Texas Leadership Christian Academy Eagles.

The Cubs continue to gel as a team under Head Football Coach Dustin Altmiller’s new offense strategy, which utilizes a spread scheme that makes it very hard for defenders to stop every big play.

Spread offensive schemes offer the best chance at huge plays down the field as long as a team has a competent quarterback and two or three lethal receivers with good hands. The Cubs have that and more when you add in a star running back who dominates the middle.

For the second week in a row, the Cubs shut out the opposing team during their rival’s Homecoming game - this time with a lopsided victory over the Eagles at Wilford Moore Stadium in Abilene.

As great as the offense is, the Cub defense has been extremely dominant since the beginning of the season and grows stronger each game, as the stats show.

Some stats and highlights for the game include-Offense: #11 Tucker Cortinez QB with 226 pass yards, #22 Kyle Stewart RB with 2 touchdowns (TD) and 93 rush yards, #7 Damian Hernandez WR with 90 received yards, #2 Jamarcus Collins with 1 TD and 84 Rec Yds, #6 Juan Castillo with 2 TDs and 52 Rec Yds, #5 Kanton Rodgers RB and #23 Eric German RB each with a TD.

Defense: #7 Damian Hernandez LB had 6 tackles, 2 assists, 4 sacks and 5 tackles for loss. #13 Shareginald Williams CB had 4 tackles, 3 assists and 2 tackles for loss. #51 Ricco Sandoval LB had 3 tackles, 1 assist, 1 sack and 1 tackle for loss. #33 Russell Warner had 2 tackles, 1 assist, 1 sack and 1 tackle for loss.

It takes a team to achieve each win, and many crucial players often will not show up in stats each week. The Cubs are 3-3 in the regular season and 1-0 for District and will play at home on Oct. 17, for Pink Out Night against District rivals the Hawley Bearcats.

Fight on, Cubs!
