Cubs Battle Owls in Season Opener

The Olney High School Cubs travelled to Cisco as the home team against the Reagan County Owls for the season opener.

Distance between schools in the same athletic district has become greater since the University Interscholastic League’s last redistricting, this being the reason the two teams met at a halfway point using the Cisco ISD football stadium for their battle ground in the season opener.

The Cubs came out strong against the Owls and it appeared after the first quarter that the Cubs would give the Owls a close game.

But the longer the game went on, the further the divide grew between the two teams, with the Cubs falling to the Owls, 13-42.

Don’t let the score dash your hopes – there were plenty of victories on the field, with plenty of potential that will be tapped in future games.

The defense remained strong except for a few breakaway plays, and some adjustments to the outside on running plays will help shore up one of the only weaknesses seen in the rumble against the Owls.

Although there were a couple interceptions from Cubs Quarterback #11 Tucker Cortinez, he remains a competent and strong passer with great mobility to scramble out of the pocket.

The Cubs saw some big plays from #9 Will Caffey as a quick route runner with good hands, #6 Jaun Castillo who is the Cubs star receiver who has an amazing ability to snatch the ball in seemingly uncatchable scenarios as seen during the Owl matchup and #2 Jamarcus Collins who has that confident, controlled aggression that makes him great running or receiving and shines on defense on deep route coverage.

Even though the Cubs’ score does not reflect it, look for the team to have some big wins this season with a chance to hit the playoffs if they get all the kinks worked out of the new spread offense before district play.

Fight on, Cubs!
