Players for the Sixth Annual McClatchy began arriving at the break of dawn to beat the day’s heat, at least the ones smart or lucky enough to secure a 7:30 a.m. tee-off time. With the 1 p.m. tee-off time, golfers enjoyed the warm Texas summer sun! Photo

‘The McClatchy’ Tournament Marks Sixth Annual Fundraiser at Olney Country Club

The Olney Recreation Association [ORA] hosted the Sixth Annual McClatchy Golf Tournament at the Olney Country Club on the weekend of July 25. The Tourney was full to capacity with the usual waiting list of golfers hoping for a cancellation to be able to enter the tournament.

The tournament is named after longtime ORA member Jeff McClatchy, who was instrumental in furthering and improving every aspect of the ORA, event organizers said. After he died in 2019, ORA wanted to find a way to honor Mr. McClatchy, a valued ORA member and past board president.

ORA President Landon Rowe attributed the success of the tournament, as always, to the hard work of the ORA board and staff, the McClatchy family and friends, as well as the many sponsors of the event.

Proceeds from the tournament fund a scholarship in Jeff and Theresa McClatchy’s honor.

The Tournament is a scramble-style tourney with a maximum of 64 teams. The weekend also included dinner, a Calcutta and an auction. Mace and Cole McClatchy, sons of Jeff McClatchy, were on hand again this year to participate in the Tourney.

Cole McClatchy said he was thankful for all the improvements to the Olney Country Club over the years.

Mr. Rowe was very thankful to all the sponsors and to all the people who helped in any way to make the McClatchy a complete success.

The following are the sponsors who helped make the tourney possible: Title Sponsor-Air Tractor. Gold Sponsors were Tower Extrusions, Brazos Communications, Teinert Construction, Vertical Roofing, Myers Family, Jeremy and Trina Johnson, James and Valerie Stroud. Silver Sponsors: Rick and Kim Turner, Ingleside Ranch, Clay Schmoker Services, B&B Concrete, DC Custom Farms, Frankie Bailey & Andrea Lowery, Ryan and Malia Cawthon, Landon and Katie Rowe, Archer & Gunn Mercantile, CEMCO and Olney Ace Hardware.
