Will B. Us against them

After watching my favorite high school (The Cubs) team practice today it got me thinking.

A Cubs football season is just what Olney needs right now. Olney has had more than its share of tragedy and death this summer along with a rash of crime.

Nothing brings a community together like Friday night lights. Locked arm-and-arm screaming “go go go “ with Cub pride. Olney against Seymour, Olney against Archer or Olney against Electra. Us against them. Our community united together through good or bad, gossip or truth, friend or frenemy, rancher or business owner. The fact is when those Cubs take the field, we raise our paws proudly in the air and everything else melts away as we raise our cheers as one community to support our Cubs.

High school football and small towns go together like peanut butter and jelly. Most likely because small towns are closer knit then bigger cities. We are more like a big extended family than a city of people and businesses. We know who everyone is on a personal level. You won’t find that in a bigger city. So of course, when our Cubs take the field its personal because these are sons and daughters of Olney, which if we are one big extended family then they truly feel like family taking the field or court. Who wouldn’t want to see their son or daughter win or at least play with maximum effort and leave everything on the field?

So as we start a new school year and a renewed faith in our Cubs lets let leave all the troubles at the gates, throw our paws in the air and remember we are all someone’s, neighbor, son, daughter, mother, father, aunt or uncle and take some of that united team spirit with us outside the gates when the game is over and love your neighbor as you would love your family.

This is Will B. looking forward to yelling Fight on Cubs!!!
