Will B. Looking Back

The 2022 school year is ending, and I enjoy this time of year even though it is busy during May. I get to look back at all the successes and a few not successful moments of Our Cubs, Lady Cubs and the town of Olney.

I have been in Olney for about four years, and I must say that I am so impressed not only with Olney ISD but with the positive changes that have been taking place in our little community. There has been an abundance of success in both areas.

The Olney Cub Football team made it to the playoffs again and continued to make great improvements; the POOHS won big again; UIL had teams make it to state; Boys Golf went to Regionals; Olney ISD continues to be ranked high in the Texas school system. Many more achievements are notable from this past year of hard-working student-athletes at OHS.

The town of Olney has a new Mayor. Mayor Rue Rogers, backed by a great City Council, is pushing for changes that Olney desperately needs: Cleaning up the dilapidated buildings; pushing on with code enforcement to continue to make Olney beautiful again; putting in place ordinances to help improve Olney and pushing through a new water treatment plant. The City is behind many more outstanding improvements for our wonderful community.

Chief Dan Birbeck continues to improve upon the Olney Police Department with the help of the hard-working and multitalented Officer Dustin Hudson along with the rest of the fine OPD officers. Chief Birbeck brought in Officer Miranda Wright and put a K9 unit to help battle the ongoing drug issues around Olney. In addition, Chief Birbeck has partnered with the city to significantly clean up the city and make it a safer community.

Local Community organizations like the Olney Chamber of Commerce and Keep Olney Beautiful partnered with great local businesses and community activists to keep pushing improvements to our fine community.

Companies like Cemco, Tower, Air Tractor, Stewarts Food Store, Fort Belknap Electric, Brazos Communications and the nonprofit Perry’s Foundation fund and supply many local organizations and groups including labor for various events and assistance with community fundraiser drives and projects that push Olney into a future where the City will thrive and become a beautiful town again.

The churches and the Refuge Christian Community Center continued to give the community the moral and spiritual compass that helps pull a community together as a family and keep the town spiritually well with all the madness. I have never been prouder of a community and look excitedly to the future of Olney, knowing that Olney is in good hands with the people who live in our great community.

This is Will B. saying, Be the Light!!!
