Will B. Giving Thanks

Thanksgiving is most likely my favorite holiday. This popular holiday is a very popular holiday for many people for many different reasons.

My reasons have changed as I matured I suppose over the years. Like most the origins of how and why this is my favorite holiday are based off of long family traditions. Tossing the ball out front or a game of football with family and friends while inside having turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, mash tators, green bean casserole, candied yams and pumpkin pie, I could go on and on, .

After said feast along with some light arguing around the table about football, politics or the current political situation, everyone moseys on over to the living room for the traditional nap while listening to the announcers begin discussion on the upcoming Cowboys game. After napping and now at halftime its time to raid the desert table again and finish off the game.

For me it’s a tradition to make a sandwich the next day or later that evening that my Mom taught me. Turkey, Mayo (real Mayonnaise not miracle whip) tomato, cranberry sauce, horse radish sauce, and purple onion. This is the one thing that I only do once a year and it reminds me of my mom who is no longer with us and of Thanksgiving more than anything else.

Throughout the years, my thoughts and reasoning for why Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday has changed. Through the years, I have about sixteen years around restaurants, probably more, and my love for cooking has grown greater through each passing year. I didn’t spend a great deal of time with my mom but one of the things I will always remember is she was a great cook. That is something I took of my own from her. So now, Thanksgiving gives me a lot of pleasure to cook the Thanksgiving meal. Although most of the time, the meal is only for three or four people. Since moving to Olney and joining Southside Baptist Church, I have found my friendships flourishing and my fellowship with my new church family growing weekly. Recently I attended our church’s annual Thanksgiving meal that was combined with our church’s 70-year anniversary. My Thanksgivings enjoyments are turning from physical pleasure such as food and football to more spiritual meaning. Time spent with friends and family fellowshipping. Being thankful for better reasons like God leading us to Olney, where our faith has grown daily and the rewards of God have been many with a wonderful home, a job that allows me to become closer to the community so I can show off just how great the community of Olney is, a loving wife of more than 20 years, being able to use my photography in my work. My list is long on the blessings God has blessed me with. To the point, reasons change, people grow and so do the reasons behind what is our favorite holiday.

This is Will B. saying I pray that your life will be blessed this holiday season with many blessings and wonderful memories.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
