Having Chicken Noodle Soup with a Soda on the Side

Having a sick day hear folks, well hoping it’s just one or two days, time will tell. As I sit here on my comfy couch watching my current favorite show and catching up on work, I can’t help but slip into my memories of past sick days long ago.

When I was a young’un there was a certain ritual that was performed on most sick days. It started with the typical overly dramatic performance to Mom and Dad, ‘I’m dying, Mom I can’t possibly make it to school.’ After much hee hawing and curmudgeonly talk, Mom relented and the day was set. A quick move to the couch with a cozy blanky and overstuffed pillows, O.J at the ready and some Frankenberry cereal and I was all set.

Cartoons at first then as the morning progressed it was time to tune into more serious matters “The Price Is Right” - no sick day could be respected without this show being watched, then maybe some “Let’s Make A Deal” followed by some chicken noodle soup, grilled cheese and a Sprite. The grilled cheese was optional but chicken noodle soup and Sprite were a prerequisite of any proper sick day.

After lunch, it was time for some Gilligan’s Island, then afternoon cartoons began, of which my favorites were always Popeye, Felix the Cat and Dudley Do Right, at least when I was younger, Captain Caveman and anything Hanna Barbera would do just fine as well. I do remember a brief period where the Giggle Snort Hotel held a particular fascination for me though.

As I grew into a teenager, I found a Ferris Buellers Day off sick day was needed from time to time. I find as an adult a Ferris sick day is needed every so often as well. If you haven’t seen this movie, please watch it as soon as possible, it is one of my favorites and never fails to put me in a good mood.

As an adult with many more worries and responsibilities I find myself needing a spiritual or emotional day off. Sounds weird but the world moves at a hundred miles and hour these days and its easy to get disconnected from God while trudging through the everyday drudgery that is adulting. What is needed is a sick day away from regular old life or adulting and some good old quiet time speaking with God, reading the Bible and just reconnecting on a deeper level spiritually with God. Isaiah 54:10 “Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,”. God is a powerful friend to have on your side. His love is unyielding, never-ending and knows no bounds. Wow, pretty amazing that we have someone to connect with like God. This is Will B saying, do you need a sick day to reconnect with God? God loves you and is waiting to connect with you.
