Football season is over, cold air is blowing in and hoodies are coming out. It must be basketball season. I enjoy playing basketball but never particularly enjoyed watching it, with the exception of attending a few Houston Rocket and San Antonio Spurs games – my two favorite teams. It was a little odd having to go to Maverick games to root for my favorite teams, but fun nonetheless.

Since moving to Olney, I have really bought into high school basketball. I love supporting our community’s youth and especially Olney High School sports. For me, football is all about heart, and basketball is about hype, more than that but that is what comes to mind when I think of high school basketball. It is getting pumped up with music before the game and then straight into nonstop action.

I attended a recent first game of the season for the Lady Cubs Varsity and Junior Varsity and it was very exciting. This year’s Lady Cubs have some really great players, aggressive and playing with so much grit. These are the two things I love to see in a high school basketball player. I believe skill can be learned but grit, heart, and aggressive playing come from something not learned. I am excited to see what the Cub Varsity and JV team players are about this season, who will shine and help drive their team to victory.

Things I like about this time of year and Olney ISD basketball are the community sitting elbow to elbow getting rowdy at times, chatting excitedly about upcoming plans for the holidays, and a whole lot of memories being made and relived. I like hot cocoa, even pumpkin spice on occasion, hoodies, a warm heated blanket on a cold day, lots of crock pot stews, and chilis, baking and cooking in the oven increases as the weather gets cooler and snuggling up to my lady GiGi on one side and my ever- faithful companion Jack on the other side. Things I don’t like: COLD WEATHER! That’s the only thing I detest most in life. I would rather sweat than freeze. What are the things you like most about this time of year? This is Will B saying, pass the hot cocoa and don’t hold back on the whipped cream!
