What the Catalytic Converter is Happening?
What is going on across the U.S. with the theft of catalytic converters? If you’re like me (not auto-savvy or mechanically inclined), perhaps you were unaware of the purpose of this valuable piece of metal. Basically, the device filters air to reduce air pollution caused by vehicle emissions.
Unfortunately, it is relatively easy for thieves to slip the device off your vehicle without notice. For example, many thefts occur while victims are shopping. The thief slides in under your car and saws off the cylinder-shaped piece of metal inserted between the muffler and the engine.
Interestingly, the converter’s functionality is not the leading cause behind the burglaries; it is the precious metals located inside. According to a National Public Radio (NPR) report, rhodium is one of those valuable metals inside the converter. It has a price tag of $28,000 an ounce, with only a tiny amount inside the device.
Several sources indicate that the typical cost is $200 for a used converter; however, with the rising price of the metal, distributors are willing to pay several hundred dollars to resale to a dealer for an even higher price. Therefore, depending on the make and model of your vehicle, you may spend upward of $2,500 to replace a stolen converter. In many cases, insurance may not absorb the total cost of replacement.
The good news is that the increased thefts have forced dealers, automakers, and repair shops to implement measures to reduce the theft of these expensive converters. One solution is rebar welding to secure the device and make it difficult to cut through. Other efforts to prevent theft are to require proof of identity and verification of the seller’s business before considering the purchase.
The local police department said the catalytic converter crime is not an issue in Olney, as there have been no reports from residents. There has been one reported vehicle theft, but the vehicle was recovered with damages. Also, someone stole one of my chrome tailpipe covers connected to my dual exhaust. Although the replacement cost was close to $100, I did not report it this time.
My advice to you--not that you want to hear my advice-- is to be aware of your surroundings and seek well-lit and well-populated places to park. Don’t let your guard down by leaving your engine on while running inside the store. Those are a couple of simple ways you can protect your stuff. Life is not as simple as it used to be back in the day. We live in a different time, and this requires having a different mindset. Let us know some of the things you used to do that you can’t do anymore.
