The Transformative Work of God
“In Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ” Colossians 2:11 NASB What a precious truth it is to know that Scripture clearly teaches true religion is not external but internal—wrought in the heart by the powerful work of the Holy Spirit. It is He who brings about real and lasting transformation in the soul of the one whom God is saving, changing them from the inside out. As described in Colossians 2, this divine work softens hearts once hardened by sin, awakening spiritual sensitivity and conviction. The Holy Spirit brings the law to bear upon the heart, exposing hidden sin and revealing our deep need for a Savior. Through this gracious wounding, He prepares the soul to receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Redeemer.
The apostle Paul writes to the Colossians: “For in Him (Jesus) all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form, and in Him you have been made complete, and He is the head over all rule and authority; and in Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ; having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.”
This passage speaks not of physical circumcision or outward rituals like water baptism, but of the inward, spiritual renewal wrought by God. The “circumcision made without hands” points to the regeneration of the heart—a theme echoed in Paul’s words to Titus: “But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.”
Beloved, as you set your hope on the final preservation of your soul in Christ, never lose sight of the Holy Spirit’s ongoing work in your life. Sanctification is a vital and glorious doctrine, revealing how God, by His Spirit, molds us to reflect the beauty and character of His Son. This work is not confined to a single moment but unfolds day by day, as God’s grace leads us further into holiness. Through prayer, Scripture, and worship, we yield ourselves to the Spirit’s sanctifying power— power that convicts, purifies, strengthens, and empowers.
So then, dear brothers and sisters, let us rejoice in this magnificent truth. Let the hope of glory stir your heart to praise: “O joyful day, when we shall rise, To meet our Savior in the skies; With hearts aglow and spirits free, In endless bliss, we long to be. When we shall see His face, In realms of boundless grace, Forever we shall sing, To Christ, our Lord and King. With saints of old, we’ll join the throng, In praises sweet, our hearts belong; For every pain and every tear, Shall fade away when Christ is near. So lift your eyes, ye weary soul, For heaven’s gates will soon unroll; With faith in Him, we shall ascend, To dwell with Christ, our truest Friend.”
