If you like purple, you must be ecstatic about the profusion of grape hyacinth blooms that have taken over many yards. Combined with the lavender dainty heads of the prolific winter weed, it is a delight for our eyes as we adjust from gray winter hues to the vibrant colors of spring. Many wonders still await as our flowers burst forth to life after snoozing all winter. My hydrangeas are getting green and growing daily so my heart is bursting with excitement for those big flower heads to “show their stuff.”

Flocks of purple marlins have come to share the joy of spring with us. The rains have coaxed those tasty worms up from their slumber to the delight of our feathered friends. Robins, blue jays, marlins, and sparrows are certainly enjoying the banquet. Peek out your window and do a little bird-watching; it most surely will make you smile.

Bill Ballard has been visited by several furry critters lately. His cat food kept disappearing during the night, so he watched for the hungry culprits. He sneaked a peek out his back door and came face to face with some squinty-eyed opossums intent on emptying the bowl of food. They appeared several nights, but Bill’s next encounter was with a fluffy red fox who must have heard about the feast on the back porch from those possums. News travels fast when food is involved. A gray fox also came. Bill has chickens, so a fox is not welcome, especially after a fox nabbed himself a tasty hen right in front of Bill one day. The chicken population is dwindling!

Here are some interesting facts about opossums: 1. They are the only North American marsupial, meaning that they raise and nurture their young in a pouch; 2. Their babies at birth as so small that 20 can fit into a teaspoon; 3. They have 50 teeth; 4. They have opposable thumbs on their hind feet for holding onto branches; 5. They are attracted by water, pet food, overripe, and rotting fruit that falls to the ground, and they love to eat cockroaches, crickets, beetles, mice, rats, and snails. Because they keep neighborhoods clean and free of unwanted, harmful garden pests and rodents that may carry diseases, they have been dubbed NATURE’S LITTLE SANITATION ENGINEERS. How fitting!

A special thanks to James Walton for supplying prizes for Bingo last week. Great prizes from a great guy. He said his middle name was “clearance” so he can’t resist clearance sales. What a fun and funny man!

The stepping stone activity on Monday produced some pretty results. Everyone had different colors of glass pieces, so the results were all different, but pretty. Special plans are being formulated for a special Mother’s Day outing at Cub Center. Angela will give more information later, so stay tuned.

Enjoy the warmth that spring brings - get out and enjoy the sights and sounds that enhance our days.
