Publisher’s Points to Ponder: A Woman’s Worth
As Women’s History Month comes to an end, I am thankful that we could offer insight into women’s contributions in our community. Throughout March, we highlighted the strength and beauty of three amazing women who have made a difference in Olney—Frances Key, Kathrine Atchley and Juanita Schlegel. Although I did not know all the ladies personally, the stories you shared with me brought them to life. I learned that these remarkable women put God and family first without losing sight of their purpose.
The world’s message to women was to make us choose between work and home. The world’s current message to women encourages work-life balance, but some of us struggle to maintain a recognizable balance for some reason or another. On the other hand, women like Mrs. Key, Mrs. Atchley and Mrs. Schlege appeared to manage life effortlessly. While standing behind their husbands as an anchor, they respectively knew their worth in the family dynamic. When they nourished their children, they chose to influence them through their actions and led by example. I believe their ability to “do it all” is that they built their lives around their relationship with God; they understood their purpose; they never gave up on people or the things they deemed worthy for the greater good.
This generation of women can benefit from the previous generation of women. History is vital for this very reason. When I was in my twenties, I thought I had all the answers. I was becoming a modern woman, so I dismissed my elders’ advice and fell flat on my face. Flat! My life experiences led me to a place of humility where I appreciate the wisdom of older women who conquered the journey I am just starting.
Take a few moments to ponder ways you can show appreciation to the women in your life. Have a heart of gratitude about their sacrifices, their moments of truth, or their smile. History is important and beneficial to us when we use it to navigate through the world.
My advice to women, know your worth, stand tall in your truth and press forward always.
