Publisher’s Points to Ponder:

Inhale....and Exhale

Why do we get so worked up over almost nothing these days? Standing in line at the store too long. Getting the wrong food order. Oh yes, and let’s not forget about losing cell phone service for more than three days with absolutely NO WARNING from the telephone provider. Really?

I was part of the group in Olney who had to survive without cell service, which I’ve come to depend on during the past 15 years or so.

I felt invisible without my phone. I felt naked without my phone. I felt like I was cut off from the world without my phone. What if something happened while I was without service? Well, scratch that last one, Will Sadler reminded me that I could still make emergency calls. Nevertheless, you understand where I am going with this.

Who gives the phone company the right to shut down service. Surely there could have been an alternative. Perhaps the phone company was giving us a gentle reminder of how important its service is to us.

While suffering from “the absence of my cell phone syndrome,” I had to remind myself to breathe every time I picked it up to make a call or check a text message. Ethan put in his “Nickel’s Worth” a few weeks ago reminding us that the absence of the cell phone allows us to be more present. Would you agree that you were “more present” during this catastrophic three-day period of doom?

I believe some people would agree that our reliance on technology has caused us to become impatient with the simple things in life. We want everything quickly, and some of us will pay any price to get it.

Rather than succumb to the black hole of technology and all of its thrills, let’s pause to ponder the benefits of returning to the old school items we’ve abandoned for technology. Now I am an advocate of the landline. Brazos Communications, I will be expanded my landline services for sure.
