Police Beat

Rural, but very rewarding

I had to drive to Crowley, TX for a class titled Procedural Justice  last week and it made me really appreciate being in Olney that much more.  Rural law enforcement has its on set of challenges but very rewarding.  I remember several years ago a police officer friend of mine from the Dallas Police Dept. came and rode with me when I worked for Anderson Co. Sheriff’s Office.  We got a call that night about cows being out in the highway.  He looked at me with a very puzzled face and asked if he heard right.  I said yes we are going to check on some cows.  He laughed so hard he could not contain himself.  He said you are really serious!  I said yes I am.  He told me that he had never in his life went to get cows off the highway.  Rural law enforcement takes on many faces.  We herd cattle every now and then.  We go to E.M.T. calls and assist with medical issues.  You may see an officer in the back of an ambulance helping perform CPR on a patient.  We help look for lost children and their puppies.  We go to family disputes and end up being part police officer and part counselor.  We are out during the storms and watch for threatening clouds that may turn into tornadoes.  Often,  you will see us at a fire with our Fire Dept. and we will be on the end of a hose, helping fight fires.  Needless to say your Olney Police Department wears many hats.  We would not have it any other way.  We enjoy being there in your time of need and doing everything we can to help you.  Urban Policing causes officers in large cities to be alienated from the community.  We are honored to be a vital extended hand of service to our community.  Call us if you need us.
