Olney Senior Cub Center Chats

Whew! What happened to spring? Those gentle breezes and mild temps must be living somewhere else ‘cause they certainly aren’t here! Nearly everyone who entered Cub Center last week made comments about the extreme heat or gusty winds. Of course they didn’t really need to comment on the wind...their heads were testaments enough to relay that message. Hairdo’s became hairdon’ts by the time they got from their cars to the door! Well, there may have been an exception or two, right Edward and Hubert?? Wanda Mc may set a trend since she tied a red bandana around her head--no unruly hair and no sweat running down her forehead! Solved two problems with one kerchief--way to be a problem solver!

The Camps, who regularly deliver meals on one of our routes, took a vacation last week. What to do, what to do? Well, enter our officers in blue! Yes, Chief Birbeck and sidekicks, Hudson and Bell, made those deliveries ever so well! Thank you for doing double duty last week to both protect and serve! We salute you for jobs well done! Thank you for your service and for your example!

Have you heard the news from NASA? Remember those lunar landings so many years ago? Samples of soil were brought back to Earth and many of the rocks were put on display. One was even put into a stained-glass window in the Washington National Cathedral in our nation’s Capital. (I even took a picture of that when I visited there). Anyway, back to my story about some of the soil. Some scientists were recently allotted a small amount of soil for experimentation, and they planted seeds. To their delight, the seeds sprouted and grew. That growth was not as vigorous as the seeds sown in Earth’s soil, but it raises hope that food could possibly be grown on the moon or in space. If space travel becomes a strong reality, then growing food for such travelers would be quite important; therefore, the excitement.

Some happenings in our sky this month will be an eclipse and a comet’s appearance. Edward Furr gave me the news that his brother is bringing his large telescopes when he comes to visit, and we will be able to see those wonders for ourselves at a large magnification. How exciting!

The pollution of our planet has really gotten out of hand. Our atmosphere, our seas, our land have all been jeopardized by man’s carelessness and neglect. Just recently, over 25,000 pounds of trash was removed from Lake Tahoe. Scuba divers plan to attempt cleaning other lakes as well, but everyone should do what he/she can clean up and eliminate part of the pollution problem. WE are ultimately responsible!

The menu for our meals appears in the newspaper each week and online, but sometimes substitutions have to be made due to supply and delivery issues. We are trying to decide on a way to notify people quickly of any changes in the menu. Please bear with us as we tackle the logistics of this process. A quick call to Cub Center can give you an update, but try to call before 10:00.

The bird has been identified! The sweet morning sounds that have been thrilling me for weeks are being chirped by the songbird of Texas -- the mockingbird! I was finally able to spot it!

Have a super week, Think before you speak. Smile at all you see, And be the best you can be!
