Rain, rain, don’t run away. Come again another day!
So thankful for Wednesday’s rain. Yes, we had some hail with it, but even so, my flowers escaped damage. Rain seems to invigorate everyone and everything. Birds sing a little sweeter following a downpour, and squirrels get a little friskier! A squirrel was seen running for cover as a mockingbird nipped at him. That should teach him to keep his nose away from her domain! The puddles of rainwater draw crowds of all kinds of critters to enjoy that wetness, whether for a drink or a bath. Anyhow, they provide entertainment for onlookers!
We are so excited to see more people joining us for lunch here at the Cub Center! The chit-chat and laughter sound so good, and smiles abound. It is so uplifting to experience the happy interaction of the diners, so come share a bit of that experience with us if you can. It will put a little bounce in your step and a smile on your face.
Do you ever stop to think about all the changes that have taken place in the last 60 or 70 years? World War I and World War II brought women out of the house and into the workforce. It was a drastic change for many, but they rose to the challenge and thrived in their new roles as laborers. Polio was eliminated thanks to Dr. Salk and his vaccine. Man has walked in space and on the moon. We’ve come from dial phones and party lines to smartphones. But, what did people do before the internet and computers?
Slide rules and basic math skills have taken a backseat to the available handheld calculators. As a math person, I was elated to have a calculator to work those calculus problems and those pesky matrices.
As summer is approaching with its high temperatures, we appreciate those people who invented air conditioners. Those swamp coolers were replaced by heat pumps and refrigerated units that also take humidity out of the house. Traveling by car in the summertime was NOT a pleasant experience! There were no air conditioners, and rolleddown windows were little help since they just blasted our faces with hot air and destroyed our hairdos. Today’s cars come equipped with cool air at the touch of a button-- ah, how wonderful!
Today many surgeries are done by arthroscopic procedures, which works without the need for more invasive surgery and lessens recovery time. Treatments for many ailments, including cancer, have come a long way in the last several years.
If you hear someone talking about the good old days and wishing to be back there, maybe they need reminding of all the things they’d have to give up.
When I was a young kid, our icebox was just that- a big block of ice was put in the top space and would be replaced with another block when the previous one melted. So, no, I don’t want to go back there!
Count your blessings and be happy! Have a great week and remember: laughter really is the best medicine.
