In the Museum: Honoring U.S. Military

As we are getting ready for the Olney Chamber of Commerce Independence Day celebration July 1, let us not forget the men and women who protect our freedom and ensure our independence. Americans celebrate the Fourth of July to commemorate Congress’s signing of the Declaration of Independence July 4, 1776.

In Olney, the festivities will commence with a parade at 5:15 p.m. at Olney Heritage Museum/Olney Enterprise Newspaper located at 213 E. Main St. The parade will include various companies, law enforcement, and individuals displaying the patriotic spirit of Olney and the surrounding communities.

While waiting for the parade to begin, please visit the military exhibits on display in the museum. The military exhibits will include items loaned by the Museum of North Texas History and items donated by members of our communi ty. We hope you will enjoy reflecting on the sacrifices these servicemembers made during their enlistments in the Armed Forces. Exhibits comprise various artifacts and uniforms from World Wars I & II, the Korean War and Vietnam. While visiting, take a moment to read love letters exchanged between sweethearts who took special care to keep their love alive across the battlefield.

After viewing the exhibits, enjoy watching the parade that will proceed to Tommy Perkins Park, where there will be a brief award ceremony. At 6 p.m., the Chamber has requested everyone to meet at the Olney Country Club to enjoy fireworks and food trucks. In addition to enjoying food from various vendors, settle in for mu sical performances by Casey Keeter, Kevin Bullock and John Hope.

Deidre Choat Brown, executive director of the Olney Chamber of Commerce, said she hopes this event will bring everyone in the community together for a moment of reflection.

The military exhibits will remain on display for a few weeks following the celebration. Olney Heritage Museum is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. We may open by appointment also. For more information, please visit OlneyHeritageMuseum.org or call 940.227.4364..
