Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor:

At the June 26, 2023 meeting of the Young County Commissioners Court, Commissioner Stacey Rogers proposed a motion to accept receipts from other sales from the Young County Historical Commission but it died for lack of a second.

The implication is that NOW only one commissioner is willing to accept ANY donations from the local Commission.

The chairman of the YCHC, John Bullock, who retired as county judge last year, and other observers were perplexed by the action, asking what should be done with the receipts? County Judge Win Graham merely made a gesture by raising his arms, as if to say, ”Who knows?”

The YCHC receipts were from the sale of its pictorial scrapbook, which chronicles the history of Young County, and is offered to the public for a price of $20.00 at local retail outlets.

The issue outlined by me, with accurate background facts, exposes a story not being told, nor recognized, by any news organization in North Central Texas.

As a former TV news anchor and reporter who covered the Tarrant County courthouse daily, I sense there is a blatant mockery of government being perpetrated by some leaders of Young County and no one is publicly holding them accountable.

Shamefully, a conspiracy to obstruct and embarrass appears directed at the Young County Historical Commission, which was created by Commissioners Court.

The local Commission seeks to accomplish a feasibility study to re-purpose the old county jail building.

The questions are should the building be preserved and re-purposed for future generations to enjoy? And, what is a cost estimate to bring the building up to code?

The study was approved by Commissioners Court last year, with one lone opponent, and is endorsed by two state agencies, the Texas Historical Commission, and the Texas Preservation Trust Fund. I submit both agencies are unaware of the disputed actions.

Now, the lone county commissioner opponent has been joined by the new county judge to refuse acceptance of cash donations by citizens to the YCHC in support of the project.

THIS is poppycock and cries for public exposure of a commissioner’s court gone amok!

The court also regularly meets without the presence of a legal adviser.
