Enjoying the Super Bowl

As I sit waiting for the Super Bowl to come across the screen, it has me reminiscing and thinking about some of my favorite memories, activities and foods that swirl around the ritual of a Super Bowl.

This year is special to me because the Kansas City Chiefs have a chance to do what no other team in the NFL has ever achieved, a 3-peat. Which just means winning three Super Bowls in a row. Besides the excitement and hype of a 3-peat there is the added excitement of the Chiefs opponent being the Eagles who a couple years ago whooped the Chiefs in the Super Bowl, so this is our chance to have a rematch, which should make for one of the best Super Bowls to watch in many years.

I always find it weird how people begin to hate a team the more they win, not too long ago it was the New England Patriots, who I do dislike but not for having an amazing dynasty run, but because it’s my older brothers’ favorite team.

Ha! I hold myself to a high standard when it comes to manners, etiquette and sportsmanship, because without these three things we are just animals rolling around in the mud fighting over food or pride.

I did not dislike the Patriots because they seemed unstoppable for many years, I respect them for their football prowess, it didn’t mean I had to like the team, but I did have to respect the team.

The Chiefs went through decades of losing seasons to arrive at the dominant position they currently are in and I just find it so disappointing to hear all the hate for such an amazing and talented team. People actually believe an absurd fantasy that the refs and the NFL are conspiring to give the Chiefs all these wins. It’s pure poppycock and all I can do is laugh at the sore losers.

On to some of my favorite foods for the Superbowl: chicken wings are always at the top of the list, closely followed by pizza, chips and dips of course are expected, soda, beer are always a must, and the top dog of delicious treats will always be BBQ and especially because Kansas City is known for its great BBQ -- and so is Texas.

Believe it or not I even love to see a nice vegetable tray - the freshness is a great break from all the richness and saltiness of most traditional Super Bowl foods.

The final points to consider are where to watch and what to wear.

Do I break out the new gear I have been saving all season for just such an occasion as the Superbowl - new hat and shirt, or do I not risk jinxing the Chiefs winning record and wear the same shirt and hat I have worn all season?

I don’t believe in superstitions or luck, so I go with the new gear, of course. The final decision and a very important decision, most likely the most important decision: where and how to watch the game.

I have watched games in bars, restaurants, stadiums and at friends’ houses and for me the answer is simple and always the same. I watch it at home, Daisy May on one side and Burt on the other side, a smorgasbord of delicious treats and snacks laid out in front of me like a feast fit for a king.

No distractions - or if a distraction is needed one of my own choosing. My home is the perfect spot, the cozy spot, the spot I can cheer, or yell or [gasp] nod off for a nap.

This is Will B. saying, Let’s Go Chiefs!!! You got this!!!
