Debating
I was thinking back on all the debates and arguments I have had over the past year. Many I had seen on Facebook. It got my brainpan to thinking about if anyone changes anyone’s mind about anything.
I use to love a good argument or debate but not so much anymore. It seems to me that two people could have a rational discussion back in the day, and one person or the other could or might be swayed to change their mind on a topic. I can honestly say I cannot remember the last time I saw or heard someone concede the argument or discussion topic.
It never occurred to me until recently that this might be part of the whole “it’s all about me syndrome “that was started back during the “me” generation. Self-important and selfish behavior was the cause of so many social issues dealing with the personality traits and mannerisms of the “me” generation. I would be happy to have a debate on the matter.
Going back to my initial point, I use to love a good debate with a definitive outcome. I have had my mind changed over the years on a few occasions if the logic was sound and it did not bump heads with my integrity or belief structure. I have gone so far as to delete some people, including my extended family, from my social media for their radical thinking. I will probably take some heat for this. Still, nothing gets me madder than a wet rooster trying to argue a point with a left-wing democrat or liberal. I have shown scientific data from a reputable institution on a subject matter debating with a liberal. They just flat out refuse to concede the argument.
Another thing that irks me more than a possum in a gum bush is having a debate or conversation. The other party talks over me when I am talking. It is just plain rude behavior and does not show good listening etiquette. When someone interrupts or replies instantly, they flat out not listening to the other party.
I am far from perfect, but I do make every attempt to show good manners and follow good debate etiquette. If you come to me with those two attributes, I am sure to listen to your perspective; if you can convince me with factual data and facts, you most likely could or may sway my opinion on the matter. Only if I have had my morning coffee, though, I have been known to be quite disagreeable and downright cantankerous before having my morning coffee, mind you. This is Will B. saying pack a lunch, bring coffee, and stop by for a good old-fashion debate sometimes.
