Seems the warmth-loving summer nymphs have been keeping our autumn weather hostage in the 90-plus range, but within a week their clutching fingers will loosen their grip and give us much cooler days. After all, this is October! Ahh! October.
Halloween costumes and candy are on display everywhere you look. Soon the trick-or-treaters will be on the march through neighborhoods; they excitedly approach the lighted porches in search of “treats” to fill their bags.
The costumes range from princesses and cowboys to devils and ghouls. Many mammas are masters at creating delightful and ingenious costumes for their kiddos. Be careful if you are out driving while the little tykes are scampering around. Safety first!
Last week saw the return of those domino playing Fikes. So good to have them back after battling the COVID for a couple of weeks. We celebrated Wade’s birthday last Thursday with yummy pecan pie muffins. Happy Birthday, Wade!
If you have hummingbird feeders out, please keep those filled with fresh nectar for a few more weeks because many of those little “jewels of the sky” are still preparing for their big migrations to Mexico. They need to fuel up and double their weight several days before leaving. A little hummer hovered around my flowers, then got eye-to-eye with me last week, before flying off. Such beautiful and resilient little birds! The rufous hummingbird nests in Alaska, so it has a 3,000 mile trip to Mexico each fall. They can fly about 20 hours a day, and can cover about 500 miles per day, but it still takes about a week to complete the journey.
They may be tiny, but they are little dynamos. If you love having them visit you, feed them. It has been proven that they will return year after year to the same places. Years ago a tiny little hummingbird made an equally tiny nest on the branch of a limb at eye level by my mom’s porch. Soon little eggs appeared, and we kept a close eye on them until one day little black beaks appeared. What a delight it was to watch those tiny little creatures grow up and join the big journey southward! What a memory!
Wow! The Pancake Breakfast is here! Get up and head to the Senior Cub Center from 7:00-11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 16! Lots of good eats, so bring the family to chow down, and you won’t even have to cook or clean up the kitchen! !
Keep Veterans Day on your radar because it will be here soon. Fun is on the agenda for that day, and a little toe-tapping music, also. Be here or be square!
Thought for the week:
“Do the right thing. You will please some people and astonish the rest.”
