Who’s trying to mess with my head? January blasted in with bells and whistles but is now rushing head over heels to make an exit. What’s the rush?? All the Christmas lights and decorations have yet to be stowed away, and except for the few days of deep freeze weather, we have been blessed with some really balmy days. Perhaps Mr. January is a bit psychic or has heard reports from previous Januarys about the unpredictability of the first month of the year. So we better dig out our heavy-duty caps (you know, the ones with those fold-down ear flaps lined with fleece) and get ready for some Arctic blasts.

January is a trying experience for sure, with February close behind. It is a time to show love and concern for neighbors and kin alike. Cold, inclement weather can be deadly for some, so keep a keen eye out for any indication that someone may be struggling. If you haven’t seen someone you usually see every day, do a wellness check. Just call or knock on their door until you know all is well. Our Meals on Wheels program requires the meal deliverer to do a wellness check, but if someone doesn’t subscribe to the program, they could need help. Let’s all be good neighbors!

Edwana Fikes and Valorie Mahler filled in and delivered meals just last week. They had one incident that required them to search for a person who had not responded to the food delivery. Yes, the person was found safe in the back of the house and talked to them, so they had smiles on their faces as they continued their route.

There are governmental rules to follow, and protocols established for various situations. One is the voice well-check, and another is to call 9-1-1 if a person is on the floor or “down.” Good things to know!

With all the various ailments making the rounds, it has been a challenge for the teachers and school personnel. Couple that with children in and out with stock show activities, which requires “everyone on deck”! Teachers, aides, janitors, counselors, maybe even a principal or two get involved in making sure all classes are covered. It brings back memories of my 42+ year teaching career! Good memories! Challenging days! But, oh, how I miss it! You, teachers, are my heroes!!

Wow! What a pecan crop this year! Under most pecan trees, people can be hand-gathering or rolling those delicious nuggets and dropping them into 5-gallon buckets. The shelling and pickin’ phase will follow next. Fingernails may get a little stained, but those tasty morsels plink into the bowl with great satisfaction in my heart and dollars saved for my pocketbook. There is nothing better than a good old Southern Pecan Pie to flop a lip on--unless it’s a slab with a big dip of vanilla ice cream on top. Stop my drooling before I drown!

When you start thinking about food, it’s hard to stop. Just keep on thinkin’ about the mouth-watering SOUP. Think about those lovin’ HANDS that chopped those fresh vegetables. Think about those GOLDEN squares of cornbread. Think about those LUSCIOUS desserts. No cooking-No cleaning-Just eating. So ya’ll come to Super Bowl Sunday to Cub Center and eat with us. $7
