Brrr! Old Man Winter blew into town Thursday, bringing with him teeth-chattering temps in the teens! The high winds produced the bone-chillin’ lows that forced many to hibernate in their warm dens. Those who did venture out were bundled up from head to toe. Smart people!

Bob Dillard looked toasty in his toboggan as he entered the Center at ‘chow’ time. Belinda Camp, dressed in hoody, scarf, sunglasses and heavy coat, was unrecognizable when she and Mitch returned from delivering meals. Manuel Garcia donned his poncho to fend off the cold while making his deliveries, but he still wore his standby pants-Bermuda shorts! He makes us smile. Sweaters and flannel shirts surely did feel and look good on the other diners.

The TRTA group met at the Center Tuesday the fourth. They discussed the availability of different insurance plans through TRS. Mention was made to start considering nominees for officers.

Members were also reminded to do volunteer work to improve their respective towns.

Cub Center could use a volunteer or two at lunchtime to help assist with trays and drinks if anyone is interested. Also, Wednesday morning Bingo sessions might be a fun time to volunteer. 10:30-11:30.

The weather app is predicting rain Thursday the 13th. Yay! We need rainthe ground needs it- the air needs it- my car needs it. All those allergens that blew in need to be washed away so the sneezing, runny noses and stuffiness will go away. I sure hope the prediction comes true, so get out your umbrellas (or not) and be ready to splash about in puddles to your heart’s content.

Texas used to be the largest state in the USA, but when Alaska entered the union, Texas became No. 2 in landmass or acreage. Texas has had the two largest natural disasters in U.S. history. The Great Galveston Hurricane in 1900 took between 6,000 and 12,000 lives. Hurricane Katrina took 1,200 lives. Radar has helped save many lives by supplying vital information to weather stations which can then send out warnings to target areas and the whole world.

Texas has two unusual animals it is noted for. The Nine-Banded Armadillo eats bugs and insects and has a life span of 12-15 years. A fascinating fact about them is that females always give birth to identical quadruplets. Another unexpected fact is that they are good swimmers and can hold their breath underwater for about six minutes. Go figure! I thought their armor would be too heavy. Unfortunately, they carry deadly diseases like leprosy, so don’t try to make a pet out of them.

Another animal Texas is noted for is the Texas Longhorn. It is a popular breed due to its unique horns that grow as long as 7 feet from tip to tip. Those horns look intimidating, but they are a gentle breed with pleasing personalities. These cattle are strong, sturdy and exhibit high drought-stress tolerance. They are normally bred for their very lean meat, which is low in cholesterol and fat. This great state produces more cattle than any other state in the United States.
